Park Scholarships Finalist Weekend
The Park Scholarships program hosts a Finalist Weekend every year consisting of selection activities that every finalist must attend to be considered for the scholarship. This year (2020) as a freshman Park Scholar, I was able to help with the weekend activities and host finalists overnight in my dorm room. On Friday, February 21st, my roommate and I volunteered to show our dorm room as a model room to finalists and their families, as well as explain the University Honors and Scholars Program. My roommate is also a Park Scholar, and we were very excited to meet all the finalists and show off our room to them! That afternoon I was also asked to attend a dinner with Park alumni, university faculty, the finalists, and their families. The next morning, I went to brunch with the finalists before their interviews began and worked an interest table related to education as well as the arts. I loved getting to know finalists interested in pursuing a career in education as well as the ones interested in joining the marching band or other musical groups on campus.
My favorite part of the weekend was hosting finalists! My roommate, Anna, and I both signed up to host and we were paired with finalists that have similar interests. I hosted two finalists, both majoring in elementary education, and Anna hosted another finalist. On Saturday afternoon, Anna and I picked up our finalists after their interviews and spent the whole night doing fun activities like eating s’mores, making crafts, painting the Free Expression Tunnel, and completing the annual tradition of making the late night drive to Cookout with the other finalists. The next morning we had breakfast and waited for their parents to pick them up.
I thoroughly enjoyed being on the other side of things this weekend as a host instead of a finalist. It was nice to calm nerves and share how amazing NC State University and the College of Education is! Both of the finalists I hosted are going to make wonderful teachers and have a positive impact on so many students. Seeing other motivated education majors is inspiring, and I hope that I was a great mentor and inspiration for them as well!
