iWolfpackReaders Research Assistant

“To acquire knowledge, one must study; but to acquire wisdom, one must observe.”

― Marilyn vos Savant

During the Spring semester of my sophomore year (2021), I worked part-time as a research assistant and teacher assistant for the iWolfpackReaders program at NC State University. NC State graduate students in ECI 645 - Supervised Practicum in Literacy - serve as tutors during after-school small-group tutoring sessions twice a week for about 1 hour each session. Each tutor has two to three Grade 3-5 students who need extra support in reading. My job as an RA/TA was to observe, assess, and reflect on a tutor’s fidelity (adherence to the intervention program, quality of instruction and language use, students’ engagement, etc) each session, provide technical support for tutors during the sessions, proctor pre/post assessments, enter data collected, and provide other logistical supports. I enjoyed serving as an RA/TA for the iWolfpackReaders program, and I plan to continue to work with them during the summer and spring semesters until I graduate. Observing the tutors in the program helped me learn new instructional strategies that I can use in my future classrooms as well as which strategies don’t always work well with every student.

I plan to use this experience as a signature event in the Professional Development category of the Passport to Success program.
