Brentwood Magnet Elementary School (Fall 2022)

“What we learn with pleasure we never forget.”

-  Alfred Mercier

During the Fall of 2022, I completed my fieldwork at Brentwood Elementary School, an Engineering Magnet school in Raleigh. This is also the school at which I will be completing my student teaching, Spring 2023. At Brentwood elementary, I work with Mrs. Womack’s 2nd grade class, and this semester, I completed my ESL internship with Ms. Fichter who pulls-out 2nd-5th grade students for ESL instruction. From Mrs. Womack, I learned how to set and maintain a positive and safe classroom environment. I also picked up several strategies for making learning accessible for all students, such  as offering students choices for how they display their knowledge. From Ms. Fichter, I learned how to use engineering projects to engage students and lower their affective filter so that they are more open to learning and practicing the English language. I also learned the importance of pre-teaching vocabulary and building background knowledge through visuals.

Below is my ESL Capstone Presentation based on learnings I gained from my NC State courses and my  fieldwork with Ms. Fichter at Brentwood Elementary
