Professional Development Session: Teaching Multilingual Learners
“Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or in the same way.”
- George Evans
On November 17th, 2022, I spoke at a Professional Development event led by my peer in the NC State ESL add-on program. The event was entitled, “PD6717: Teacher Toolbox - Meeting the needs of your Multilingual Learners.” I was one of three student speakers to share about what the ESL add-on program/ TEFL minor is at NC State and to give general teaching tips for accommodating multilingual learners. The learnings I shared were mainly centered on what strategies work best for elementary-aged students, but I also contributed to speaking on strategies that work for all-aged students as well. I enjoyed speaking at this event, and would be open to giving a similar presentation in my future workplace. Many teachers express feeling unprepared to teach multilingual learners, and I think a professional development session, such as this one, would go a long way in helping prepare these teachers.
